4th International Summer School on Stable Isotopes in Animal Ecology

When: 14. - 18. September 2020

Where: Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin (IZW), Germany

Costs: 390€

(includes access to 5 days of lectures and practical course work; also coffee breaks, warm-up BBQ on Monday and free guided tour through Berlin)

Content:

Our course is divided into three parts: The introductory part will cover the conceptual and theoretical frame for using stable isotopes in the respective fields. Also, participants will have the opportunity (optional) to present and discuss their own results with the experts and among peers. We have scheduled an ice-breaker BBQ on Monday evening as a warm-up event. The core of the course will see students introduced to the practical steps of stable isotope analysis by familiarizing themselves with stable isotope ratios mass spectrometers (Delta V Advantage) connected to various peripheral instruments such as Flash EA and TC-EA for analysis of C, N and H stable isotopes. Further, we will elaborate on the analysis of non-exchangeable hydrogen in organic matrices and necessary preparatory steps ahead of analyses. The final section of the course is devoted to the statistical analyses of stable isotope ratios. This will cover the use of multivariate statistics, the application of various stable isotope related R-packages (e.g. MixSIAR and SIBER) and introduction to the R-package IsoriX for geographic assignments of animals based on stable isotope ratios.
