Development of scientific concepts and actions for the protection of highly threatened species
World population has reached 7 billion! After growing very slowly for most of human history, the world's population more than doubled in the last 50 years. This process is linked with another extreme: The accelerated global decline in biodiversity.
Especially, the extinction of mammalian species which are often paramount examples for entire ecosystems are in special attention of the public and therefore the protection of even one “umbrella species” necessarily requires the conservation of the entire biodiversity system.
The traditional conservation methods are insufficient to cope with this new development. There is a high demand for alternative concepts and methods to meet the new requirements of a changing world.
