EAZA BioBank

The EAZA BioBank was founded in 2016 and aims to be the primary source for population management and conservation research in zoos. The Leibniz-IZW is one of four biobanking hubs that store samples from zoos on behalf of the EAZA. If needed (and approved of by the EAZA BioBank Working Group), the samples will be provided for genetic analyses, carried out either at the Leibniz-IZW or at another scientific institution.

The EAZA BioBank inventory currently comprises 647 samples of 206 species that have been sent by 17 zoos (see chart below).
